Hooray! My copy of Whlt Stillman's The Last Days of Disco is here. I can finally watch it again and enjoy the endlessly quotable dialogue, the appearance of Wilson from House as an amoral jerk and best of all, the chance to watch a club that is obviously supposed to be Studio54, a place that is first on my list to go to whenever they get round to inventing a time machine. Oh, I love this film - I love the fact it unashamedly loves the Disco movement even it sees the problems which set in, especially later crap cash in records. There's a real palpable sadness for me when the characters realise that the golden age of disco is over - a sense that something wonderful is being lost. Stuart Maconie once said of Chic (practically Studio's house band) that "Chic's music is part of a beautiful dream that pop is having about itself". I can't add to that. Awesome music in an awesome film.
Such a shame it's not easier to get hold off. It was deleted a couple of years ago due to problems getting rights to the music on the soundtrack or something. So if it's ever on TV, watch it!
