Conclusions from my rations experiments as I haven't updated in a million years.
It is possible to live on Rations, especially if you have a lot of potatoes. But recreating the situation in the modern age is insanely difficult. Food shortages were random throughout the country and at various stages of the war. Hence, the fiendishly tricky Points system. What did I take away from it when i finished this in June? That a lot of people, mostly women worked damned hard to create the best meals they could with the most improbable and unappetisin ingredients. (Whale meat seems to have been universally despised). Housekeepers of World War II, I genuinely applaud you.
I also have a fresh appreciation for the variety of food in the supermarkets. Ironically, at a time when we are being encouraged to eat local food all the time, I get a real kick out of being able to eat exotic fruit like lychees again.
Anyway, future entries will be devoted to such fascinating topics as to the most recent Heroes episodes, with special emphasis on the always wonderful Adrian Pasdar, who if I had my way, would not only have been nominated for an Emmy & won but would have parks and stamps dedicated to his honour. *Sigh*
